For the aviation enthusiasts who just love the fast jets of yesteryear, Thunder City is once again fielding its Lightnings, Buccaneers and Hunters at AAD2008.
Cape Town based Thunder City owns the largest civilian owned collection of ex-military jets in the world.
It has an impeccable safety record with its fleet of jets that has flown more than 1600 incident-free sorties. The fleet includes the world’s last four flying English Electric Lightnings and three BAE Buccaneers, as well as seven Hawker Hunters and a Strikemaster.
Thunder City participation at AAD2008 forms part of the “Thunder Sounds” campaign, which presents visitors with the opportunity to experience the unique sounds of the various jets I the company’s fleet. Thunder City pilots will thrill the crowds on the public days with the ‘sonic boom’ of the awesome Lightning, the ‘crackle’ of the powerful Buccaneer and the Hunter’s distinctive ‘blue note’.
An added attraction offered by Thunder City is a completely refurbished Puma helicopter. The beautifully restored Puma can be seen as both static and active display during the show.
As a certified aviation maintenance organization (AMO), the Thunder City base will launch its innovative Puma modernization program at AAD. Whilst the program seeks to extend the life of this medium-lift helicopter, it will include upgrading the avionics and installation of a ‘glass cockpit’ to significantly improve pilot workload and flight safety.
